There are many opportunities to save on your taxes this year. Today, I’d like to discuss a few of them.

The Homestead Exemption is a great thing for many reasons.

First of all, it takes off $50,000 from your assessed value so that your tax base is lower when using this exemption. The Homestead Exemption also protects you from increases in your homeowners taxes. Therefore, you won’t have any surprises relating to the cost of owning your home.

With the Homestead Exemption, tax increases are capped at 3% a year.

So, what do you need to do to file for this exemption? It’s actually as simple as visiting the tax assessor’s office in the County Administration Building, which is located at 1800 27th St. here in Vero Beach.

I hope you’ll take advantage of these tax savings that are available to you.
There are six things you must bring with you when you come: your voter’s registration, your driver’s license, your car’s registration, your deed for your property, a utilities bill in your name prior to January 1, and your social security number along with a photo ID.

If you plan on filing, I would definitely recommend doing so before the end of the year. Technically, you do have until March 1 to do so, but will need to prove you lived in the house as of January 1.

Other exemptions you may file for if you qualify include disability, widow/widower, and senior citizen. I hope you’ll take advantage of these tax savings that are available to you.

If you have any other questions or would like more information, feel free to give me a call or send me an email. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
